Our performance

The Care Quality Commission is an independent body. Its role is to bring together the regulation of health and adult social care in England. One regulator helps to make sure that there are consistent standards of quality across all services.

Annual Health Check

Each year, every PCT and NHS Trust in England is required to complete an Annual Health Check declaration which states how it has performed against a set of national standards. These cover issues such as:

  • Patient safety
  • Clinical & Cost Effectiveness
  • Corporate & Clinical Governance
  • Involving Patients and the Public
  • Access to services
  • Healthcare premises and facilities
  • Public health.

The declaration reflects the PCT’s assessment of its own performance, based on reports from internal management systems.

For 2009/10, the PCT has submitted one declaration; this is for Provider Services the arm that directly provides services (covering services such as Physiotherapy, Health Visiting and District Nursing).

From these internal processes, the Trust Board has arrived at an agreed declaration of full compliance against each of the core standards for 2009/10.

The declaration will be checked by the Care Quality Commission, which compares it to information it holds about the PCT. As part of this check, the PCT may be inspected.

Using the declarations by each PCT and Trust, together with reports on financial management, service reviews and the results of any inspections, the Care Quality Commission finally awards a performance rating based on meeting all of the Core Standards set by the Government in the assessment year.
