Policy summary

The Trust recognises its duty to keep patient and staff information safe and confidential whilst, at
the same time, not compromising its ability to share information where it is needed. All staff
employed by the Trust have a duty to keep such information strictly confidential and to use it
only for the proper purposes in accordance with the law and Department of Health policy.
There are a number of legal and professional requirements that must be considered when
handling confidential information, including:
* The Data Protection Act 1998
* The Caldicott Principles
* The NHS Code of Confidentiality
* Commmon Law Duty of Confidence
* Professional codes (GMC/ NMC standards)

The Trust is committed to compliance with all of the above.
