Find an Optician

Woman having an eye test You can find a list of all local opticians via the National NHS website. You can also find a list of here. If you are new to the area, you could also ask a neighbour or consult a local directory eg. Thomson .

You are free to choose your own optician and do not need to see a doctor first. One of the best ways of finding and choosing an optician is to ask family or friends. In most cases, an appointment can be made by telephone.

Will I be required to pay?

Most people now have to pay for sight tests, glasses and contact lenses. Details about the charges and those people who can get assistance with the cost of treatment are explained in leaflets HC11 and HC12. These are available from your optician and Department of Social Security offices.

If, after a sight test, the optician feels you need glasses or contact lenses and you qualify for NHS care, you will be given a prescription. You can take this to any optician, allowing you to look around for the best buy. Please note that prescriptions for children under 16 must be dispensed by a qualified optician.

In compliance with current EU regulations employees in certain occupations eg. VDU operators are entitled to an eye sight test which will be paid for by their employers.
