Listed below (in alphabetical order) are a list of local drug treatment services:

Addictive Behaviour Centre

The Addictive Behaviour Centre (ABC) is currently based at Northern Birmingham Mental Health NHST - All Saints Hospital, although there are plans for relocation. The centre is a hospital-based service offering inpatient assessment and detox.

There are a number of specialist teams working within the ABC. There is, for example, an HIV/AIDS counsellor, a mother and baby team, and specialist community nurses.

The ABC is a tertiary service - referrals need to be made through community alcohol teams, community drug teams, or GPs.

Allenscroft Project

A junior project addresses healthy lifestyles with 8-12 year olds as an alternative to drugs. Many of the young people are from impoverished backgrounds and mainly of Irish descent.

Aquarius Action Projects

Currently manages

  • Birmingham Asian Alcohol Project

It is currently working with Birmingham Social Services to look at service provision for families with children at risk where alcohol or drug use is a problem.

Betel of Britain

Long-stay residential provision currently for socially vulnerable and excluded males (18+) many with drug and alcohol-related problems.

There are plans to extend the service to include women and an intention to begin a schools drugs prevention programme in the next 2 years.

The organisation will refer residents for day-care and counselling.

Birmingham Drugline

Drugline is a confidential, free advice and information service for drug users, ex-users, family, friends, carers and people employed to help users. Services provided include:

  • Information and advice on safer drug use
  • Counselling and support
  • Referrals
  • Outreach service
  • Needle exchange scheme
  • Steroid user service

Birmingham East Youth Partnership

Local youth project seeking to empower young people (mostly between ages 16-25) by offering diversionary and awareness raising activities.

The partnership links and networks with other drugs agencies, but referrals are only made as part of consensual action-plan, talked through and agreed to with young persons themselves.

Birmingham Federation of Clubs for Young People

Touring theatre group attempting to deliver the message around local youth clubs and targeting all age ranges of children and young adults (8-20).

Cascade

Drugs related education and training provider, primarily for young people between 12-25, but will work with any groups, such as parents and professionals, around drug issues.

Catalyst Theatre in Health Education

Touring and participatory theatre in the health education project. A significant proportion of the programme addresses drug use, with specific work targeting 8-11 and 11-14 year olds.

Central Housing Training Services

Training consultants working with staff, volunteers and tenants associations around housing issues. Drug dealing and environmental concerns relating to drug and alcohol use are frequently raised.

Community Drug Teams

There are four Community Drug Teams each of which is responsible for a different part of the city:

These four teams offer a range of services for drug users their families and carers. Such services include assessment, counselling, support and advice, needle/syringe exchange and auricular acupuncture.

Crack Outreach Team

The Wheeler Street Crack Outreach Team has a city-wide remit, based in Newtown.

It provides a specific service to those experiencing problems relating to the use of crack cocaine.

Ferngate Project

Outreach project targeting youngsters (16-20) that have come through the care system. The project works closely with the Crack Outreach Team to establish 1:1 counselling sessions.

Focus Housing Tenancy Support Team

Housing Association tenancy support team with dedicated alcohol and substance abuse worker that links with other teams and specialist tenancy support services.

Fast-track assessments for alcohol and drug detox programmes.

Golden Hillock Centre

Youth Group working with Muslim young people aged 11-25. Provides culturally sensitive counselling (including HIV & AIDS issues).

Provides educational and vocational training and welfare advice. Organises diversionary activities, within acceptable cultural and religious boundaries.

Homefinder Project

Seeks to find solutions for people experiencing accommodation and homelessness problems - often relating to drug-use associated exclusions.

Identifies as a particular issue, the lack of available help for solvent/gas abusers and need for more outreach provision for rough sleepers.

Maypole Youth & Community Centre

Youth project directed towards 11-20 year olds situated on an outer-ring estate with most of its work directed towards reinforcing messages against drug-use and anti-social behaviour.

Midlands Life Education Centres Trust

Preventive drug education project for 3-11 year olds in the Midlands (3-15 years nationally).

The aims of the centres include introducing ideas to the young about the importance of making healthy choices.

Parents for Prevention

Provides support to carers of drug users.The project targets parents of pre-school children upwards and aims to provide them with accurate, balanced information about drugs and emphasises the importance of positive communication within the home.

Ravenshurst Cottages

Residential accommodation and foyer scheme for young people (16-25) who may not have completed their education and may also be experiencing social problems, quite often associated with drug use. The foyer aims to remotivate them to return to education.

Saathi House

Youth project presently in the process of organising culturally sensitive workshops and education and training resources relating to drug use for the local community in Aston. Mainly targets young people (11-25) but will work with other groups as the need arises.

Provides several supported housing projects with staff on site who can offer assistance and relevant advice regarding drugs and alternatives.

20-20 Programme

Project targeting disaffected students who have either dropped out of school, been excluded, or are at risk of exclusion (often experiencing drug related problems).

Women in Theatre

Work through drama with women on probation orders - examining ways of breaking out of behaviour patterns that are associated with the likelihood of drug misuse.

Seeks, through assertiveness and improving communication skills, to raise individuals' self esteem.

Youth Link Project (The Children's Society)

The project provides city centre outreach, specifically to youngsters on the streets who are under 17 years old.

Works closely with Drugline, but will make referrals to all Birmingham agencies.
